Facing Identification Mark (FIM) Barcode -

Facing Identification Mark (FIM) Barcode for Business & Courtesy Reply Mail
The National Customer Support Center provides at no charge camera-ready positives for customers who use business and courtesy reply mail envelopes. A high quality image of the appropriate POSTNET barcode and the Facing Identification Mark (FIM) is provided to customers to use in the design of their business and courtesy reply mail envelopes. Some Postal Business Centers generate the positives locally as needed. FIM and barcode positives can be ordered through local Postal Account Representative.

Business Reply Mail service enables mailers to receive First-Class mail back from customers by paying postage only on mail returned to them from their original distribution. Courtesy Reply Mail enables mailers to receive First-Class mail back from customers who apply their own postage on pre-printed and pre-barcoded envelopes.

FIMs (another type of postal barcode for automated processing) are used for facing and presorting business and courtesy reply mail. Currently, three FIM patterns are in use. Coding certain types of letter mail with FIM patterns provides the following:

  • machine-detectable indicia for automatic facing and canceling of letter mail

  • a means of separating business and courtesy reply mail from other letters and cards in the collection mailstream for direct OCR or BCS processing

For more information, please call the National Customer Support Center at 1-800-238-3150. Hours of operation are 7:00 AM through 7:00 PM CT.
